The School

Mackenzie College is a state, co-educational school (year 7-13 high school). It is located in Fairlie, a beautiful rural town, with the backdrop of the mountains and lakes of the Mackenzie. It is only 40 minutes drive inland from Timaru and two hours from Christchurch. The school is set in spacious and attractive park-like grounds, with close proximity to the mountains, Aoraki Mt Cook (New Zealand’s highest mountain), 3 ski fields (Roundhill, Fox Peak and Mt Dobson), rivers (Opuha and Opihi) and lakes (Opuha and Tekapo). Our mission statement says that Mackenzie College shall provide a positive learning environment where all students are encouraged to strive for excellence and to acquire the skills which will enable them to become responsible citizens of New Zealand and the World. Our school is closely involved with the community, and as such is proud of the partnership between students, families, staff and the local community.

Our college is special because we have:

  • A safe and supportive environment where the staff and students get to know each other really well. Form classes are organised in vertical form groups.
  • A unique and inspiring environment that is well suited to our outdoor education programmes, activities and curriculum trips.
  • Teachers who put their students first, and are willing to "go the extra mile".
  • Students who are encouraged to take up challenges like Science Fair, Writing and Speech Competitions, Spirit of Adventure, Lip Sync Competition, Maths, Science and English competitions, as well as taking part in numerous school sports teams.

All students are encouraged to strive for personal achievement in the context of a supportive, empowering environment.

As a school, Mackenzie College is committed to and embraces, new developments to enhance the learning and enjoyment while at the college. We have a thoughtful and innovative curriculum that is student centered and sees learning opportunities in all that we do.
